Journey through the Bible

PROMISES IN FIRST PETER
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 12, 1009

Homework: I Peter says “Be ye holy”, why?
Answer: Because, Jesus said “I am holy”.

I Peter should perk you up when reading.
Peter denied Jesus and ran. He went back to fishing.

Introduction:
Scholars say it is a mystery to why Peter wrote this book at all. Peter sounds like a supreme church leader addressing churches within 1/4 of a million miles from where he is located. Why is this odd?
A) No indication Peter knows any of the people with whom he is writing.
B) He does not mention any of them by a specific name. Peter called to minister to Jewish Christians not Gentiles. This was Paul’s territory.
C) Some scholars speculate that when Peter was visiting the church in Rome, he heard of the persecution and wanted to encourage believers. Peter never says from where persecution was coming. What Peter did say was that Jesus suffered all the way to the grave. Therefore, Christians should be prepared to do the same.
D) Peter urges believers to live like Christians ought to live – submitting to God and to the authority that is over them.

Writer:
Scholars believe that I Peter was penned by Silas and Peter was the author. I Peter 1:1 and I Peter 5:12

Date:
Book was probably written around the 60’s AD. It was written either just before Nero’s persecution started or right after Nero started. Persecution began July 15, 64 AD. Nero persecuted the Christians because he burnt Rome but falsely blamed this action on the Christians.

Location:
Scholars believe book was written in Babylon, which is the outskirts of modern day Baghdad. I Peter 5:12-13

Main Point:
If you suffer for what is right, God will reward you for it.

1. The Readers:
Strangers scattered abroad. Regions associated with Paul’s ministry. Look at map that reflects Paul’s three missionary trips.
